Starlink or fixed wireless for a rural Durham property
If you run a business on a rural property near Port Perry, Uxbridge or the north end of Clarington, this is a real decision with real consequences, and the marketing on both sides is unhelpful.

Fixed wireless means a local provider putting a small antenna on your building aimed at a tower or a relay somewhere in line of sight. Starlink means a dish aimed at satellites. Both bypass the absence of a wired connection, and they fail in completely different ways.

What decides it, in order
Is there a fixed wireless provider covering your address?
Often the answer is no, and the decision is made. Small regional wireless providers cover specific areas with specific towers, and coverage stops abruptly. Call and ask about your exact address, not your general area.
Can you see the tower?
Fixed wireless needs line of sight. A hill between you and the tower, or a stand of mature trees, ends the conversation regardless of what the coverage map says. A good provider will do a signal check from your roof before selling you anything. One that will not is worth avoiding.
Can you see enough sky?
Starlink needs a clear cone, not just a clear line, because the satellites move. Run the obstruction check in the app from the actual mounting position. Then look at what will be taller in five years, because a tree that is fine now is a service call later.
What is your upload requirement?
If you are pushing camera footage offsite, running cloud backups, or doing video calls where you are the one being seen, upload matters more than the download figure anyone quotes you. Ask both providers for upload specifically.
Do you need to reach something on your network from outside?
Consumer Starlink uses shared addressing that prevents straightforward inbound connections. If you want to view cameras remotely or reach a machine from off site, either pay for a service tier that supports it or plan a different approach. Many fixed wireless providers will give you a static address on request.
Where each one wins
Starlink wins when there is no fixed wireless coverage, when the property is surrounded by hills but has open sky, when the site is temporary, and when you want a connection with no physical infrastructure in common with anything else, which is the failover case.
Fixed wireless wins when a provider covers you with clear line of sight, when latency matters, when you need a static address, and when having a local company to phone is worth something to you. That last point is underrated. A local wireless provider will often send someone. Satellite support means shipping hardware.
The weather difference, honestly
Both degrade in weather. They do it differently.
Starlink’s problem is snow accumulating on the dish and heavy rain attenuating the signal on its way through the atmosphere. The units heat themselves and handle ordinary snowfall. A heavy wet dump can beat the heater until it clears.
Fixed wireless at these distances is less affected by rain than satellite, since the signal travels a shorter path through less atmosphere. Its weather problem is more often physical: ice loading on the antenna, or wind moving a mount out of alignment.
Neither is reliable enough that a business which loses real money during an outage should depend on one alone.
Why the answer is often both
For a rural business that genuinely depends on being online, the arrangement that holds up is two links on different technologies, with a router that fails over automatically.
The reason is specific. Two wired providers in the same area frequently share infrastructure upstream, so one incident takes out both. Fixed wireless and satellite share nothing: different frequencies, different paths, different providers, different failure modes.
If you have fixed wireless that is generally good, adding Starlink as the backup costs a monthly subscription and some configuration. For an operation where a day offline means a day not invoicing, that is one of the better value purchases available.
The configuration point matters. Failover has to be automatic. If it requires someone to move a cable, it will not happen when it needs to, because that person is out on a job.
The part that is not about internet at all
Two adjacent problems get tangled into this decision and are worth separating.
If you need to connect two buildings on the same property to each other, that is a wireless bridge, not an internet service. A bridge extends your own network between buildings. It does not provide internet, and no amount of Starlink puts the shop on the same network as the office.
If your problem is that phones do not work inside a steel building, that is a cellular question. Though a new internet connection plus Wi-Fi calling often solves it for free as a side effect, which is worth trying before buying a booster.
A rural site frequently needs all three: internet to the property, a bridge between the buildings, and something for mobile coverage. Scoping them together is cheaper than three separate visits.
The short answer
Call the fixed wireless providers first and ask about your exact address. If nobody covers you, or nobody can see your roof from their tower, Starlink is your answer and the work is in mounting it properly.
If you do have a fixed wireless option with clear line of sight, it is usually the better primary connection on latency and support, with Starlink as the automatic backup.
If your business loses money when the internet is down, do not choose. Have both.
