Accessibility Statement

We want anyone to be able to use this website, including people who navigate by keyboard, use a screen reader or enlarge the text. Here is what we do, where we know it falls short, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

The standard we work to

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, because a page you can’t use is a page that doesn’t do its job.

That is a target, not a certificate. We haven’t had the site formally audited by an outside party.

What the site does today

  • Every link, button and form field shows a clear outline when it has keyboard focus.
  • A “Skip to main content” link is the first thing a keyboard reaches on every page with a site menu.
  • Menus open and close from the keyboard, and Escape closes them.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, the site’s animations stop.
  • Text and background colours are checked against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratios before they are used.
  • Text on our pages follows your browser’s font size setting, so zooming or raising the default size enlarges the page instead of breaking it. The exception is the place names drawn inside the coverage map graphic, which scale with the map rather than with your font setting.
  • Each page declares its language, so a screen reader uses the right pronunciation.

Known limitations

  • The service-area map on the home page is embedded from Google Maps, and we don’t control how accessible it is. The towns we cover are listed in text beside it, and on the service areas page.
  • The downloadable checklists are PDF and Word files, and we haven’t checked them with a screen reader yet.
  • The client portal is a separate system run on other software. This statement covers redsilicon.ca only.

Easier to talk it through?

If a page isn’t working for you, a phone call gets you the same information without it.
