What Whitby is, in the parts that affect this work
Whitby is two working towns wearing one name. South of the 401 you have Port Whitby and the Whitby Business Park: established industrial stock, some of it decades into its second or third tenant. North at the 407 and Baldwin interchange, Brooklin Gate is still being built.

South of the 401, the cable is already there and nobody knows what it is
Units in Port Whitby and the Whitby Business Park have usually been fitted out more than once. Above the ceiling tile there is cable from every tenant who ever held the lease, unlabelled, some of it live and some of it terminating in a wall that has since moved.
The temptation is to leave it and add more. That is how a ceiling ends up with four times the cable it needs and no way to trace a fault. Our first visit on a building like this is usually an hour with a toner working out what is actually in use, because that answer changes the quote significantly in either direction.
Sometimes the honest finding is that the existing cable is fine. Cat5e installed properly in 2009 will still carry gigabit to a desk phone and a workstation. If that is what we find, we will tell you, and the job becomes labelling and patching rather than a re-pull.
North in Brooklin, the only thing that matters is being there before the drywall
Brooklin Gate is new construction at the 407 and Baldwin interchange. On a new build, cabling is cheap while the studs are open and expensive the moment they are closed. A drop that costs very little to run on the right week costs several times that as a surface-mounted afterthought.
The specific thing to watch is a general contractor's quote with a line reading data cabling included. That line is real, and it usually buys the cheapest cable that passes a visual inspection, terminated by whoever was on site, with no labelling and no test results. It is not fraud. It is just what that line item costs.
Ask for the test results. If nobody can produce them, nobody tested it, and you will find out which drop is bad on the day you move in.
What we would tell you to spend less on
Cat6a everywhere. Unless you are running 10 gigabit to individual desks, which almost no Whitby business is, Cat6 does the job for less money and is easier to terminate in a tight back box. We would rather put the difference into more drops.
Certification testing on a small office fit-out. Continuity and labelling come as standard on every job we do. Full certification to a TIA standard produces a document that matters when a landlord, an insurer or a prime contractor asks for it. If nobody is asking, it is a report that goes in a drawer.
Getting to you in Whitby
Whitby is close enough to our Oshawa base that no regional travel charge applies. Mobilisation still does on an install, because a van has to be loaded whether the site is next door or an hour away, and it appears as its own line rather than buried in the hourly rate.

Before you call
Can you work in the Whitby Business Park after hours?
Yes, and for an occupied unit it is usually the better answer. Pulling cable above a working office means moving people, and moving people costs more than the after-hours premium. We schedule around your operation rather than asking you to schedule around ours.
Our Brooklin building is still framed. When should we call?
Before the electrical rough-in if you can, and definitely before insulation. That is when the routes are still negotiable and we can coordinate with the electrician rather than working around finished work. A site visit at framing stage costs a fraction of what a change order costs later.
Do you deal with the landlord or do we?
Either. Most Whitby industrial landlords want a certificate of insurance and a description of the work before anybody drills anything. We have that paperwork ready and we would rather send it directly than have you forward it.
