IT support in Whitby, twenty minutes away rather than ninety

A lot of Whitby businesses moved east and kept the IT provider they had before the move. That works until the day something needs hands on it.

What Whitby is, in the parts that affect this work

Whitby is two working towns wearing one name. South of the 401 you have Port Whitby and the Whitby Business Park: established industrial stock, some of it decades into its second or third tenant. North at the 407 and Baldwin interchange, Brooklin Gate is still being built.

This page is about what that means for it support specifically. For how the work itself runs, what is included and what it costs to scope, the Managed IT Services page is the one to read.

Remote support is most of the job, and then it isn't

Ninety per cent of support is genuinely location-independent. A password reset, a mailbox rule, a printer driver, a Microsoft 365 licence: none of that cares where the technician is sitting, and any competent provider handles it in minutes from anywhere.

The other ten per cent is a switch that will not come back up, a workstation that will not post, a camera that has gone dark, a fiber run cut by a contractor in the ceiling. That is a van and a person, and the difference between twenty minutes away and ninety minutes away in eastbound 401 traffic is the difference between an inconvenience and a lost day.

We are in Oshawa. Whitby is next door and there is no regional travel charge. That is the entire pitch and we are not going to dress it up as anything more sophisticated.

The awkward part: we may not be the answer

If your current provider is good and the only complaint is drive time, the sensible move is often not to replace them. It is to keep them for the software and the helpdesk, and put a local company on the infrastructure and the hands-on work. Plenty of our Whitby clients are exactly that arrangement, and we get on fine with the incumbent.

We will say so on the first call if that is what we think. An IT provider that tries to win everything from day one is optimising for its own invoice.

What we check first in a Whitby office, whatever you called about

Whether your Microsoft 365 mailboxes are backed up. They are almost certainly not. Microsoft keeps the service running and does not keep your data for you. Two years of email is a business record.

Whether the backup has ever been restored from. A backup nobody has tested is a belief, not a control.

Who else still has access. Former staff, former contractors, the web company from three websites ago. This is the cheapest thing on the list to fix and the one most likely to matter.

Getting to you in Whitby

Whitby is close enough to our Oshawa base that no regional travel charge applies. Mobilisation still does on an install, because a van has to be loaded whether the site is next door or an hour away, and it appears as its own line rather than buried in the hourly rate.

We are a service-area business based in Oshawa with no storefront, so every job happens at your premises. If your site sits at the edge of what we cover, we would rather say so on the phone than find out on the day.

Before you call

How fast can you actually get to us in Whitby?

For a booked visit, we schedule it and we turn up. For something urgent in business hours, we are twenty minutes away with clear roads and we will tell you honestly on the phone if the traffic makes that forty. We would rather give you a real number and let you decide than promise an hour and miss it.

Can you take over from our current provider without a gap?

Yes, and the transition is mostly paperwork and access rather than technical work. The order matters: we document what exists, get our own access, verify we can actually do the job, and only then does the old provider's access come out. Doing it the other way around is how a handover becomes an outage.

Do we have to sign a long contract?

Monthly services are monthly. We will happily write a longer term if you want price certainty, but we are not going to use a contract to keep a client who would rather leave.
