Cat6 vs Cat6a: which one your building actually needs

Nearly every cabling quote you receive will offer Cat6 as standard, and some will offer Cat6a for more money as the future-proof option. Both are reasonable. Which one is right depends on how long the cable will stay in the wall and what will eventually be plugged into it.

The cable itself is a small part of the price. The labour to install it is most of the cost, and that labour is the same either way. This is why the honest question is not which cable is better but whether you will ever be back to do this again.

The one number that matters

Cat6 does support 10 Gigabit. That surprises people who have been told otherwise. What it does not do is support it for the full 100 metre channel length. The practical limit is around 55 metres, and it comes down further when cables are tightly bundled or running through a warm space, because heat and adjacent-cable interference both eat into the margin.

So the real question is how long your runs are.

In a small office where the furthest jack is 30 metres from the rack, Cat6 will carry 10 Gigabit if you ever need it. Paying for Cat6a buys you very little.

In a warehouse where a run to the far corner is 80 metres, Cat6 will never carry 10 Gigabit on that run. If there is any prospect of needing it, that run wants Cat6a.

Measure before deciding. Not the straight-line distance across the floor plan, but the actual cable path: up into the ceiling, along the joists, around the obstruction, down the wall. That path is frequently half again as long as the distance you would pace out.

Where Cat6a earns its price

Long runs where 10 Gigabit is plausible. Anything past about 55 metres of actual cable path that might one day connect a server, a storage system, or a busy wireless access point.

Dense bundles. Where dozens of cables run together for a long distance, interference between adjacent cables becomes a real factor. Cat6a is built to resist it.

A building you will not revisit. If the ceiling is about to be closed, or the walls finished, or the space is occupied and disruptive to work in, the cable in the wall may be there for twenty years. The incremental cable cost is trivial against the cost of coming back.

Runs to wireless access points in a high-density space. Access point capability keeps climbing. A cable to a ceiling access point in a busy space is one of the more likely places to eventually want more than a gigabit.

Where Cat6 is the right answer

Short runs. Most offices. If nothing exceeds 55 metres, the ceiling on your capability is the same for both.

Desk drops. A computer on a desk is not going to need 10 Gigabit. It is not close.

Tight conduit. If the existing conduit is nearly full, the thicker cable may simply not fit, and forcing it damages the cable in ways that show up on a certification test.

Tight bends. Cat6a needs a gentler bend radius. In a cramped riser or a shallow wall cavity, that is a genuine installation constraint rather than a preference.

When the budget is the constraint and something has to give. If the choice is between Cat6 with every drop you need and proper certification testing, or Cat6a with fewer drops and no test report, take the Cat6. More correctly installed and tested drops beats fewer better ones.

The mixed answer, which is usually best

Almost nobody needs one cable type throughout the building. A sensible specification often looks like this:

Cat6a for the backbone runs, the runs to wireless access points, anything going to a server room or a camera aggregation point, and any run over about 55 metres.

Cat6 for desk drops, printers, phones, and short runs to fixed devices.

That gets the capability where it might matter and does not pay for it where it will not. Ask for a quote structured this way and see what the difference actually is. Sometimes it is small enough that going Cat6a throughout is simpler to manage.

The thing that matters more than either

A Cat6a run installed badly performs worse than a Cat6 run installed well.

The failure modes are all in the workmanship: untwisting the pairs too far back at the termination, kinking the cable pulling it, exceeding the bend radius, cable ties done up too tight, running alongside electrical conduit, exceeding the length limit. Any of those turns a premium cable into an underperforming link.

Which is why the specification line to care about most is not the category. It is whether every run gets certification tested against the standard with a report you receive, per run, at handover. That distinction is worth understanding before you sign anything.

If a quote offers Cat6a but no certification testing, and another offers Cat6 with full certification and as-built drawings, the second one is the better job.

The short answer

For a typical office in Oshawa or Ajax with runs under 55 metres: Cat6, tested and certified, is the right call.

For a warehouse in Courtice with long runs to the far end, or a building you are unlikely to open up again for fifteen years: Cat6a on the long runs and the backbone, Cat6 on the desk drops.

For anyone being sold Cat6a as the answer without being asked how long the runs are: ask them how long the runs are.
