Most buildings do not need fiber optic cabling. Here is when yours does.

Fiber has a reputation as the fast option. Inside one ordinary building that is not the reason to install it, because copper already carries ten gigabit and nothing in a small office is asking for that.

Fiber solves distance, electrical separation and hostile environments. If your building has none of those, you are buying glass for no return.

The short version

  • Copper stops at 100 metres of total channel. That number decides most of these jobs.
  • Fiber carries data and no power, so cameras and access points still need copper at the end of the run.
  • Between two separate buildings, fiber is usually right even at short distance, because it puts no electrical path between the structures.
  • Multimode is for inside a property. Single mode is for long runs and anything you might extend later.
  • Untested fiber is worth nothing.

The one number that decides it

A copper link is limited to 90 metres of solid horizontal cable plus patch cords, for a total channel of 100 metres. Past that it either fails or works badly, showing up as intermittent slowness nobody can pin down. The limit is about the cable, not the switch, and no setting removes it.

When a device has to live further away than that, you either put a second telecom room closer to it and feed that room with fiber, or run fiber to the device and convert back to copper there. Measure along the route, not across the floor plan: cable goes up, along, around obstacles and back down, and it adds up faster than people expect.

When to use fiber optic cabling in a business building

Five situations where it earns the cost.

The run is longer than copper allows. A camera at the far corner of a yard, a switch in a back building, an access point at the end of a production floor.

You are crossing between separate structures. Two buildings normally sit on two electrical services with two grounding systems. Copper between them lets current flow between those grounds, and it is a fine conductor for a nearby lightning strike. Glass conducts nothing, so even at forty metres fiber is the safer install.

The cable goes outside or underground. Outdoor rated fiber in conduit or direct burial handles moisture and temperature swings without copper’s corrosion and surge exposure.

The area is electrically noisy. Welding bays, large motors and variable frequency drives radiate interference that copper picks up. Fiber ignores it.

You need more than copper carries between switches. The backbone between a main rack and a satellite closet aggregates every device behind it, and it is the one place in a small building where twenty five or forty gigabit starts to make sense.

Where copper is still the right answer

Copper wins at the last hundred metres, which is most of the cable in most buildings, and the reason is power. Power over Ethernet sends electricity and data down the same copper cable, which is how cameras, access points, door readers and desk phones run without a local outlet. Fiber cannot. A fiber run to a camera needs a media converter and a power supply at the far end: another box in the weather, another thing to fail.

Copper is also repairable by more people: a damaged jack takes ten minutes and a punchdown tool.

Single mode and multimode, without the brochure

Multimode fiber has a wider glass core and uses cheaper optics. It is the normal choice for backbone runs inside one building or across one property, and you will see it in orange, aqua or lime green jackets depending on grade.

Single mode has a narrow core and carries light much further. It is yellow jacketed and it is what goes in the ground between buildings. The cable is not expensive, and the old price gap in the electronics has narrowed.

The practical rule: short and inside one property, multimode is fine. Leaving the building, or sitting in a trench you never want to open again, put single mode in and pull more strands than you need. The trench is the expensive part, not the glass.

What this means for your building

A contractor’s yard in Bowmanville with a main shop and a parts building sixty metres across the gravel is the textbook case. Sixty metres is inside copper’s limit, so somebody always suggests running Cat6 across. It works right up until the first storm, because you have tied two grounding systems together with a wire across an open yard. Put single mode fiber in conduit under the drive, a small switch in the parts building, and copper from there to the desks.

A single-storey clinic in Whitby needs no fiber at all. Every room is inside 90 metres of the closet, and fiber buys nothing a tested copper plant does not already deliver.

What to do about it

  1. Walk your longest run with a measuring wheel or a pace count, following the route the cable would take. Under about 75 metres, stop worrying about fiber.
  2. List anything in a separate structure, outdoors, or in a trench. Those are the fiber candidates.
  3. Check whether the far end needs power. If it does, plan for a small switch and a power source there rather than fiber to the device.
  4. If you are digging, put spare conduit in the trench even if you are not pulling fiber this year.
  5. Insist any fiber is tested with an optical loss test set and that you receive the results. See tested and certified are not the same word for what that report contains.

Will fiber make our internet faster?

Almost never, inside the building. Your speed is set by what your provider delivers to the front door. Fiber in the walls changes how traffic moves between your own switches and does nothing for a 200 megabit connection shared by twenty people.

We have a copper run between two buildings that has worked for years. Should we replace it?

If it has survived several winters it may keep going. It is an accepted risk rather than a correct install, and the failure mode is damaged equipment at both ends. Replace it the next time the yard is open.

Can we run fiber ourselves?

Pulling it, sometimes, with care about bend radius and pull tension. Terminating and testing it, no. Talk to someone who does fiber optic cabling before you order a length you cannot change.
