Signal strength tells you almost nothing about whether it will work

The phone in your hand shows signal strength. Signal strength answers one question: can this device hear the access point. It says nothing about whether there is any airtime left to talk in.

Wi-Fi is one conversation at a time per channel. Every device on that channel takes turns, and a device that is far away or old talks slowly, holding the channel while it does. Put sixty people on one access point and each one is waiting for fifty-nine others, at full signal strength, the whole time.

This is why a call centre floor or a busy professional office needs more access points than the coverage map suggests, each covering a smaller area at lower power. You are not buying coverage at that point, you are buying airtime, and the design objective is the opposite of the one that makes sense in a warehouse.

Voice is the workload that exposes it

A file download that takes four seconds instead of two is invisible. A voice or video call needs a small amount of bandwidth continuously and predictably, and it is ruined by delay and jitter long before it runs out of throughput.

So a network can pass a speed test with an excellent number and still produce calls where people talk over each other. Speed tests measure throughput at one moment. Calls care about consistency over minutes.

If your complaint is calls rather than downloads, the useful fixes are usually prioritisation on the wireless, fewer devices per radio, and a hard look at what the internet connection is doing when someone runs a backup at eleven in the morning. Adding bandwidth is the fix that gets sold and the one least likely to help.

Neighbours are part of your design

In a multi-tenant building your neighbours' access points are on the same channels as yours, and there is no negotiation. In the 2.4GHz band there are only three channels that do not overlap, which in a full office building is nowhere near enough.

The practical response is to lean on 5GHz and 6GHz, which have far more channels and travel less far, and to accept that travelling less far is a feature in a shared building. It also means a site survey in a multi-tenant building has a shelf life, because the tenant upstairs can change your radio environment without telling you.

Because they measure different things. A speed test asks how much data can move in a burst. A call asks whether a small, steady stream arrives on time, every time, for twenty minutes. Congested airtime, too many devices on one radio, or an upstream connection with no prioritisation all produce good speed tests and bad calls.

How many access points do we need for our floor?

Is Wi-Fi 6 or 7 worth it?

For a dense office, the newer standards genuinely help, because most of what they improve is efficiency in crowded environments rather than headline speed.
