What Bowmanville is, in the parts that affect this work

Extending Wi-Fi to another building is not what you want

The request is nearly always some version of: can you extend the Wi-Fi to the shop. It can be done, with a repeater or a mesh node, and it is the worst of the available options.

A repeater has to hear the main network well enough to relay it, and it halves the available throughput because it talks to both sides in turn. Across a yard, through two exterior walls, that link is marginal at the best of times and it degrades when the leaves come out. The result is a second building that has Wi-Fi some of the time, which is harder to live with than none.

What you actually want is a dedicated link between the buildings, either a buried fiber or a point-to-point wireless bridge, and then a proper access point in the second building fed by that link. The bridge is a separate piece of equipment doing one job well instead of one device doing two jobs badly. It costs more up front and it is the difference between a network you use and a network you complain about.

Outdoor coverage over a yard is its own design

Covering a yard, a lot or a work area outside is a different problem from covering a room. There are no walls to contain the signal so it goes further than you expect, there is nothing to reflect it back so coverage drops off cleanly with distance, and the equipment has to survive Ontario winters and direct sun.

Outdoor-rated access points on sensible mounts, aimed rather than scattered, and cable that is rated for outdoor use and properly protected where it enters the building. The place these installations fail is the cable entry: water tracks down a cable into a building far more readily than people expect, and a badly sealed penetration is a slow leak nobody attributes to the network install.

Heritage buildings downtown limit where an access point can go

In the King Street commercial buildings, an access point needs a cable, and the cable routes available are the ones described on our Bowmanville cabling page: usually surface raceway rather than a concealed run.

Which means access point placement is a negotiation between where it should ideally go and where a cable can actually reach without cutting into original fabric. Thick masonry party walls also mean the unit that covers the front of a narrow deep shop will not reach the back, so two modest access points beat one strong one. Turning the power up on a single unit does not push signal through a solid brick wall, it just makes the front of the shop louder.

Can we get Wi-Fi in the barn?

Usually, and the honest version is that the barn needs its own access point fed by a real link, not the house's Wi-Fi stretched further. Steel siding and roofing block signal effectively, which cuts both ways: hard to get in from outside, and quite good coverage once there is an access point inside.

What is the difference between a mesh system and a bridge?

A mesh system shares one radio between serving your devices and carrying traffic to the next node, so throughput drops with each hop. A bridge is a dedicated point-to-point link that only carries traffic between two locations, on its own radio, usually with aimed antennas. For inside one building mesh is fine. Between buildings, a bridge is the right tool.

Our internet is slow. Will better Wi-Fi help?

No, and this is worth being blunt about. Wi-Fi is the last few metres. If the connection into the building is the limit, better Wi-Fi delivers the same slow connection more reliably. We check the upstream first, and if that is the problem we will tell you rather than sell you access points.
