What a VMS does that an NVR doesn't

A local NVR is a recorder. A video management system is software over the top of your cameras: several buildings in one interface, footage held off site as well as on, users and permissions managed centrally, and updates that arrive rather than needing a site visit.

The practical dividing line is this. One building, one rack, one person reviewing footage — an NVR is cheaper and does the job. Multiple locations, staff turnover, footage that must survive the recorder being stolen, or a genuine need to find things in video quickly — that is where a VMS earns its subscription.

Video analytics, minus the sales pitch

Modern analytics run on the camera or in the platform and classify what they see: a person, a vehicle, a licence plate, a line being crossed, an object left behind, a door propped open. The useful consequence is search. Instead of scrubbing six hours of empty loading bay, you ask for every vehicle that entered between 9pm and 5am and get a dozen clips.

The second useful consequence is fewer false alerts. Classification-based detection ignores rain, headlights and cats, which is what makes alerting practical at all — and what makes monitored response affordable, because operators aren't paid to review nothing.

What analytics will not do is replace a properly placed camera. If the angle is wrong, the software has nothing to work with.

Designing for evidence, not reassurance

A surveillance system that reassures you is easy. One that produces evidence is a design problem: lighting at night, angle relative to approach, resolution at the distance that matters, and a clock that is actually correct so timestamps hold up.

We design against the specific scenarios you're worried about — theft at the loading bay, disputes at the counter, damage in the yard overnight — because each of those needs a different camera in a different place.

Who can see what

Larger sites need several people to have access without everyone having everything. We set up role-based access so a supervisor can review their own area, while full export and configuration rights stay with whoever should hold them.

Common questions

Before you call

Can we view several sites in one place?

Yes. Multiple buildings can be brought into a single interface with per-site permissions, so a regional manager sees everything and a site supervisor sees their own location.

Does surveillance footage hold up legally?

It's far more likely to if the system is set up correctly — accurate time, sufficient resolution at the point of interest, and exports that preserve metadata. That's what we design for.

Is a cloud VMS worth the subscription over a local NVR?

Only for specific reasons: more than one site, footage that needs to survive the recorder being stolen, staff access that has to be managed centrally, or genuine use for analytics and search. One building with a couple of people reviewing footage is usually better served by a local NVR and no monthly bill.

What can video analytics actually detect?

Reliably: people, vehicles, licence plates, line crossings, loitering, objects left behind, and doors held open. Less reliably, and we'd be cautious selling it: behaviour prediction and facial recognition, which also carry privacy obligations under PIPEDA that most sites don't want to take on.

Can cameras trigger on specific events?

Yes. Motion zones, line crossing and door events from access control can all trigger recording flags and alerts, so you're not scrubbing through hours of empty corridor.

What happens if a camera stops recording?

The system alerts. A camera that quietly stopped recording three weeks ago is the classic failure, which is why health monitoring is part of every install we do.
