IT support in Port Perry, where the till matters most
In a retail or hospitality business, the computer that cannot fail is the one taking payment. Everything else can wait until Tuesday, and most IT support is priced and staffed the other way around.

What Port Perry is, in the parts that affect this work
Scugog is a township of roughly 21,600 people that expects to pass 24,000 by 2028, and its economy is agriculture, tourism and light manufacturing rather than office parks. Downtown Port Perry is a lakefront main street of heritage retail with a BIA behind it. Outside the village it is farmland.
This page is about what that means for it support specifically. For how the work itself runs, what is included and what it costs to scope, the Managed IT Services page is the one to read.
Payment first, email second
Scugog's economy runs on agriculture, tourism and light manufacturing, and in the village that means retail, restaurants and services with a real seasonal peak. On a busy Saturday the failure that matters is the payment terminal, the point-of-sale, or the internet connection both depend on.
So the useful preparation is unglamorous. Does the payment terminal have a cellular fallback, and has anyone tested it. Is the point-of-sale system's data actually backed up somewhere other than the machine under the counter. Is there a written card on the wall telling whoever is on shift what to do when it stops, so that a nineteen-year-old on a Saturday is not the escalation path.
None of that requires a monthly IT contract. We will happily set it up as a one-off, and we would rather do that than sell a managed plan to a business with four computers.
Your internet connection is the whole business now
Point-of-sale, payment, bookings, accounting, the phone system if it is internet-based: all of it goes through one connection, and in the village the realistic options are limited while out of the village they are more limited still.
Which makes the failover conversation more important here than the cybersecurity conversation, and that is the reverse of how IT is usually sold. A cellular backup for the payment terminal is a small monthly cost and it is the highest-value thing most Port Perry retailers can buy from anybody.
Beyond that, if the business genuinely stops when the connection stops, a second link on different infrastructure with automatic failover is worth more than any other line on our price list. Automatic matters: a failover somebody has to switch over will not get switched over during a rush.
Seasonal staff are your actual security problem
The threat to a village retail business is much more mundane than the one in the headlines. It is a shared password that six former summer staff still know, an email account that a supplier invoice scam reaches, and a booking system where everybody logs in as the owner so nothing can be attributed to anybody.
Individual logins, multi-factor authentication on the email account, and a written routine for removing access when somebody finishes for the season. That is most of the risk closed, it costs almost nothing, and it takes an afternoon.
The invoice scam is the one that actually takes money from businesses this size: an email that looks like a supplier asking you to update their bank details. No software prevents it. A rule that bank detail changes are confirmed by phone to a number you already had does.
Getting to you in Port Perry
Port Perry is inside our regional travel band: one flat charge per site visit, on the quote as its own line. For a small job that charge is a real proportion of the total, so it is usually worth batching two or three things into one visit. Tell us everything on the list and we will schedule it that way.
We are a service-area business based in Oshawa with no storefront, so every job happens at your premises. If your site sits at the edge of what we cover, we would rather say so on the phone than find out on the day.
Want this scoped for your site in Port Perry?
Tell us the building and what you are trying to achieve. We will tell you what it takes, and whether you actually need it.
Before you call
We have four computers. Are we too small for you?
No, and you may well be too small for a monthly plan, which we will say if we think it. Plenty of Port Perry clients use us hourly for the things that need doing and call when something breaks. We would rather have that relationship than talk you into a subscription you do not need.
Can you help with the point-of-sale system?
We support what it runs on: the computer or tablet, the network, the internet connection, the printer, the backup. The application and the payment processing belong to the vendor and we coordinate with them rather than pretending to be them. In practice most point-of-sale problems turn out to be network or connection problems, which are ours.
Is the seasonal peak a problem for scheduling?
It is the reason to do the work in the off season. We would much rather set up a business properly in February than try to fix it in July. If you are reading this in July, call anyway and we will do what can be done now and plan the rest.
